The student responds by squeezing with the calf continuously, the horse leans into the pressure and quickens, and the circle gets worse — a precise instruction has not actually been given. Both horse and student end the lesson frustrated, and nothing in the session was measurable.
The better decision: convert the instruction into an event. 'As the shoulder leaves the line, apply your left calf for two strides, then release; keep your outside hand half-open so the shoulder stays on the track.' The student now has a trigger, a duration, and a release, and you both can check one observable outcome on the next circle. This matters because instructor certification assesses whether you can produce correct riding through other people, and event-based instructions are the tool that makes that possible.
A video self-check rubric: three passes, three different questions
