Pulling a seizing rider to the ground or trotting the horse drastically increases the risk of trauma to both the rider and volunteers. Stepping away from the horse abandons the rider, guaranteeing a dangerous fall.

A SMART goal must be Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound; specifying a 4-cone course, a 3-out-of-4 success rate, and an 8-week timeline meets all criteria. Trotting is not inherently contraindicated if the rider has medical clearance, and a bareback pad provides less stability and could actually increase friction and skin breakdown.

Asking open-ended, feeling-based questions shifts the locus of control to the rider, fostering the intrinsic kinesthetic awareness necessary for independent riding. Direct commands (extrinsic feedback) are useful for beginners but create dependency if overused. The goal is physical self-awareness, not verbal distraction, vocabulary testing, or resting the horse.

A safe and balanced canter transition requires the rider to be vertically aligned and balanced at the preceding gait; correcting the posture at the trot via half-halts is essential. Cueing for the canter while unbalanced will drive the horse onto its forehand and likely result in a rough, unsafe transition. Leaning too far back or gripping with the knees creates severe biomechanical faults, restricting the horse’s movement and destabilizing the rider.
